Unlock the Magic of Reading Within Your Child
As an educator, I’m often asked by parents, “What can I do at home to help my child learn to read?” Or sometimes I hear, “My child just doesn’t enjoy reading.” Sound familiar? If it does, keep reading. Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing several keys that you can use at home to unlock the magic of reading within your child.
Key #1 - Read TO your child. No matter your child’s age, they can benefit from you reading to them. When a competent reader reads to a child, they are exposed to important aspects of reading such as fluency, intonation, stress and rate. Does your child need to follow along as you read? Not necessarily. If they are an advanced reader, then possibly, but if they are still in the beginning stages of learning to read, let them just listen and enjoy. Open your child to the magic of reading by reading to them. Not only will they hear HOW to read, but it will begin to instill in them a love of reading.
Key #2 - Find out what interests your child, and go with it. If they like comics, get some age-appropriate comic books. If they really love to learn about animals, check out some amazing nonfiction books at the library. Think about it...do you want to read something that is boring or uninteresting to you? Of course not. Students are required to most often read what their teacher gives them. If we allow them to have some choice at home, that can translate into much more positive reading experiences. If your kiddo isn’t sure what he likes, take him to the library and let him explore. It can open up a whole new world.
